Domestic Abuse
What is domestic abuse?
Domestic abuse is defined as any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults, who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender and sexuality.Domestic abuse is rarely a one-off incident and is often made up of different types of abuse within that one abusive relationship.
Anyone can be a victim regardless of gender, age, sexuality, race, culture, religion or class.
How to get help
If you are a victim of domestic abuse, there are lots of appropriate and confidential services that can help you. Whether you just want to see what your options are or you want to leave the situation, there are people there to help you.
Are you worried about a friend or family member?
Have you noticed a change in their behaviour?
Have they had unexplained bruises?
Do you see them less than you used to?
It can be very hard to identify someone who is experiencing domestic abuse because changes in their behaviour or appearance can be subtle and take place over a period of time. They may also find it difficult to disclose what is happening to them because they are embarrassed, ashamed or scared.
If you do have concerns about a loved one, it may seem scary or awkward broaching the subject for fear of upsetting them, embarrassing them or getting it wrong. However, raising your concerns may give them the confidence to speak out.
Recent research conducted by Women's Institute found that those experiencing abuse are more likely to disclose what is happening to a friend or family member.
If you think a friend or loved one is being abused, share your concerns with them and ask them if they would like to talk. They may not feel ready to take any steps so it is important to listen and to be understanding, non-judgemental and supportive. Reassure them that it is not their fault and that they do not have to suffer alone.
Don't worry; you do not need to have all the answers because there are many agencies in this area that can support people experiencing domestic abuse.
If you would like advice or support for yourself, or for a friend, colleague or family member, please contact one of the agencies below. We will be able to provide you with information, support and advice on safety
