What Are We Doing about Alcohol Related Crime?
Designated Public Place Orders (DPPOs)
If there is substantial evidence of alcohol related crime and ant-social behaviour in a specific area we can apply for a DPPO. A DPPO gives accredited persons such as Police Community Support Officers and Neighbourhood Wardens powers to control the consumption of alcohol within the designated area. They can require someone to stop drinking - if they fail to do so they can be issued with a fixed penalty notice. We have 21 DPPO areas in Corby.

Street Pastors was Launched on Friday 9th July 2010 – street pastors are out on the streets in the Rockingham Road/Old Village area every Saturday night between 10pm – 3am. Street Pastors are Christians from different churches who walk around the streets, engaging with people to care, listen and dialogue. People from local churches have been working in partnership with the Police, Council, NHS and other agencies in order to set up Corby Street Pastors.

We run Operation Stay Safe during the school summer holidays and half term holidays, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Any young people found (between 6-12pm) intoxicated are removed by a police officer and our neighbourhood wardens and are taken home. Our hotspot areas for youth drinking are targeted – open spaces, parks etc and follow up visits by our Community Safety Officers are done with parents the following day.

We often run Alcohol Weeks of Action in Corby to tackle alcohol related crime and disorder as well as other local community issues. Throughout the week, the Partnership will proactively work with licensed premises. Test purchasing is carried out at licensed shops – and during our last week, two out of a total nine visits resulted in individuals being issued with an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice for underage sales. There will now be further investigations carried out with regards to prosecution of the premises at which the sale occurred.
-
In addition we have ongoing proxy (where adults by alcohol for young people) and test purchasing operations (working with trading standards) to address underage sales within our off-licence premises and ongoing programmes of activities for young people running on Friday and Saturday evenings within the Borough.

Various initiatives have been delivered to raise the awareness amongst young people around the harms caused by alcohol including; A professional interactive drama - delivered to more than 350 young people aged between 14-16 years old and 'Free House Comic'
which is a story written by Corby Young People to raise the harms caused by alcohol amongst young people. The comic has been put together by a
group of young people and tells collective stories of what can happen to young people when they drink. The comic has been based around real
accounts of young people that have had problems through the misuse of alcohol.
- CCTV - personal CCTV units have been installed in a number of our taxis across the Borough. This is to both reduce the incidents of crime and disorder within our taxis and also to help increase the feeling of safety amongst the community that use them. This and 6 talking units have been deployed. We have also installed 6 talking CCTV units across the Borough and purchased additional mobile units that can be rapidly deployed throughout the Borough within our high crime and anti-social behaviour areas. The community often tell us that they would like to see more CCTV cameras in their area as they feel it makes them feel safer. We have had nearly 5000 arrests that have been directly attributable to our system.
